When 30 Plant Foods May Not Be the Right Starting Point

People experiencing substantial bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation or other gastrointestinal symptoms may find that rapidly increasing fermentable fibres aggravates their symptoms. Conditions such as IBS, inflammatory bowel disease, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), food intolerances and other digestive disorders may also affect how different plant foods are tolerated.
In these circumstances, the priority may be to understand what is contributing to the symptoms and improve digestive function and tolerance first, rather than simply trying to reach a target of 30 plant foods.
Some people may benefit from a temporarily modified therapeutic diet or other individualised nutritional approach under appropriate professional guidance.
